Specialist areas of surgery
Mr Gerard Powell is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is a Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interests in joint reconstruction and replacement and musculoskeletal tumour reconstructive surgery including:
- Musculoskeletal oncology
- Hip and knee replacement
- Ankle and foot injuries and disorders
- Upper limb injuries and shoulder conditions
- Spinal disorders.

Mr Powell currently holds positions as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Supervisor or Senior Lecturer at:

- Epworth Private Hospital
- University of Melbourne – Senior Lecturer
- Supervisor of Surgical Training – Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Australian Orthopaedic Association.
Education and training
Mr Powell graduated from The University of Melbourne in 1987 and completed orthopaedic training in 1995 before taking up an appointment at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
He spent 1996 until late 1998 undertaking post-graduate fellowships in adult reconstructive surgery and orthopaedic oncology in London (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital), Salzburg, Vienna (Algemeines KrankenHaus), Bologna (Istituti Ortopedico Rizzoli) and Gainesville (University of Florida).
He has been a member of the Victorian Sarcoma Group, the Australian Arthroplasty Society and the International Society of Limb Salvage Surgery since his return to Melbourne in 1998.
